Titian (c. 1488–1576) was the preeminent painter of the Venetian Renaissance and founder of the Venetian school of Italian Renaissance art. In mythological works inspired by classical poets including Ovid and Catullus, Titian captured the gaiety and abandon of antiquity through incomparable masterpieces such as the Bacchanal of the Andrians and Bacchus and Ariadne.
