Prudence Island Lighthouse Sandy Point Light Portsmouth, Rhode Island Prudence Island Lighthouse Art Print is from an original watercolor painting on a nautical chart by the Artist, William B. MacGregor Jr., ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prudence Island lies just over a mile offshore in the upper reaches of Narragansett Bay and is part of the town of Portsmouth. Prudence Island is approximately 7 miles long and 1 1/2 miles across with a summer population of about 2000.. In 1850 local residents petitioned Congress for a lighthouse at Sandy Point to help mariners pass thru Narragansett Bay's East Passage. The current lighthouse which was constructed in 1823 and originally was on Goat Island where Newport Harbor Light stands today. Then in 1851, it was transported to Prudence Island placed in operation on January 17, 1852. It is a thirty-foot-tall octagonal granite tower and is the oldest lighthouse in Rhode Island and one of the few lighthouses in the country to retain a “birdcage” lantern. A dwelling for the keeper was built about 190 feet west of the tower with six rooms with a kitchen Since Sandy Point was prone to flooding during storms, an elevated plank walkway linked the dwelling to the tower. During the hurricane of 1938 devoured everything in its path and the keeper’s house was demolished but the stone lighthouse tower remained standing. Sadly five people consisting of the lighthouse keeper family and guests were washed out to sea and drowned. The keeper’s dwelling was not rebuilt after the hurricane. The light was then electrified the following year, and the revolving lens was replaced by a fixed, fourth-order lens, further simplifying the task of caring for the light. A few island residents looked after the light until it was automated in 1961. At that time, a diaphragm horn was mounted on the lantern r oom’s deck to replace the station’s fog bell. The light was listed on the National Register of Historic places in 1988. Prudence Island Light remains an active aid to navigation, now fitted with a 250-millimeter modern lens showing a green flash every six seconds. On August 11, 2001 a license was granted to the Prudence Conservatory to care for the lighthouse. ------------------------------------------------------------ Nautical chart art print of Prudence Island lighthouse in Portsmouth, RI.
