ORGINAL GOLDEN AGE DUTCH 1761 PRINT BY ROBBERT MUYS/PAINTING BY PHILIPS WOUWERMAN "PREPARING A LADY AND GENTLEMAN ON HORSES FOR THE HUNT." Copperplate engraving by Robbert [sic] Muys (1742-1825) was rendered in 1761 after a painting by Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668). Measures 27,5cm x 25,4cm. Printed on heavyweight, hand-made cotton rag paper. A stunning 18th-century (dated 1761) copper-engraved plate in very good condition commensurate with age. Two small insignificant unrepaired tears in border unaffecting image, one measuring 7mm, the other measuring 23mm. The inking is still quite dark and saturated. No fading. No stains. No mold. No odoriferous qualities. No marginalia. Some dealer inscriptions on verso in lead (see picture). Overall, quite lovely, crisp, and clear. Plate frame lines are still evident along the borders. Robbert [sic] Muys was a Dutch master engraver and brother to Nicholaes Muys (1740-1808), a well-known Dutch portrait and landscape painter. Phillips Wouweerman was a Dutch painter best known for his lavish depictions of horses and hunting scenes during the Golden Age of the Dutch Renaissance. Embedded in the artistic environment and tradition of his hometown of Haarlem, Wouwerman made an important and highly influential contribution to the canon of seventeenth-century Dutch painting. His pictures were in demand during his lifetime, and even more sought after in the 18th century. Throughout Europe, formerly princely art collections like those in Dresden and St. Petersburg still bear witness to this widespread admiration of Wouwerman's art.
