JEAN VEBER (French Impressionist/Satirist/Secessionist, 1864-1928) "The Covered Face". An intriguing image here, in which Veber pokes fun at the hallowed art of portraiture. Worked entirely in Paris, first as a painter but mainly as an illustrator for some of the satirical publications of the age such as "Le Rire" and "Gil Blas". His works, especially his political sketches and cartoons, often landed him in controversy and trouble. Auto-lithograph* published in "The Studio" 1899. May well be a work submitted to the "Studio" to publicise his art, or else a commission from the Editor, as I cannot find a trace of it having been published anywhere else. The all-important blindstamp is located below the image, on the right. [*means signed by the artist in the stone.] Signed in the stone, below the image, bottom right. SIZE: Sheet measures 20 x 28.5 centimetres. CONDITION: Excellent. No problems at all. Published by "The Studio" magazine 1899. Hence "lifetime". The Studio was a lavishly-produced, prestigious quarterly festschrift and showcase of graphic art, to which both leading and promising artists offered examples of their work. Some were commissions from the editor, too. Whistler, Beardsley, Waterhouse, Vallotton are just a few of the artists who featured. The publication took lithography to new heights in the 1890s, producing pioneering, superb quality images. SHIPPING: Via Royal Mail Tracked service, both for UK and overseas. For everybody's peace of mind. I'm happy to combine shipping if there's more than one of my items that you like.
