Soap, such as we use, was unknown to the Greeks, though they had various tolerably satisfactory substitutes. Then the lady put on the chiton, and the toilette began. She then either bore a fan in the shape of a palm-leaf, and brightly tinted-the ladies of Tanagra seem to have preferred them blue with a red border --or else a maid held over her in the open air a large parasol.
