Born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Knight studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before training under Charles Gleyre at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He settled permanently in France in 1871, establishing his studio in Rolleboise along the Seine, where he captured atmospheric scenes of the French countryside through plein air painting.
