ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by Pillement and engraved by James Smith. Published by Robert Sayer at the Golden Buck in Fleet Street. Jean-Baptiste Pillement (24 May 1728 – 26 April 1808) was a painter and designer, known for his exquisite and delicate landscapes, but whose importance lies primarily in the engravings done after his drawings, and their influence in spreading the Rococo style and particularly the taste for chinoiserie throughout Europe and in 1754 he left Lisbon for London. Pillement spent eight years in England, fully exploiting the English taste for landscapes. This suggests a date between 1754 and 1762. PROVENANCE: The print was later listed in Sayer & Bennett's catalogue of 1775, in the section 'Sets of small prints'. It is described as 'a curious collection from the designs of Mess, Pillement, Vernet, and Peters, and neatly engraved by Smith'. There are 12 prints in the series, of which this is number 3.
