2 Antique Book Plates Monkey Species Andrew Bell 1726-1809
These charming prints of different species of monkeys are signed ''A. Bell Prin. Wal Sculptor fecit''. They are the work of Andrew Bell(1726-1809) a Scottish engraver, printer and publisher, best known for being a founder along with Colen MadFarquahar of the Encyclopedia Britannica. These 7 3/4 by 10 1/4 inch copperplate engravings are most likely book plates. The plate block mark are visible around the images. The left edges are uneven - likely where they were un-expertly cut from a book - the other edges may have also been trimmed. I've no been able to identify the source - it may have been an early edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. There are a few light smudges and tan foxing spots, but the paper is good quality and quite clean. See my other listing for 2 more of these monkey prints.
