Vintage Print: "Meknes Arches" Source: Morocco, published in 1995 Image description Title: "At Meknes, one of Morocco's imperial cities, a lonely procession of tired columns stands, worn by time and weather. Dandelions, wild daisies, and weeds struggle bravely for survival among eroded pillars and mossy arches. These ruins were once part of a magnificent, colonnaded stable that covered twenty acres and house the royal cavalry. This grandiose structure was built by Sultan Moulay Ismail, who ruled Morocco from 1672 until his death in 1727." Adjoining the royal stables were vast granaries, warehouses for food supplies in case of siege. These granaries also held barley and hay for the sultan's 12,000 horses. A remarkable feat of engineering, the granaries were temperature-controlled by and intricate system of water-bearing conduits."
