Orbigny & Buffon - 1860 Hand colored steel engraving. Georges-Louis Le Clerc, Comte de Buffon (September 7, 1707 - April 16, 1788). French naturalist. Buffon's views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. This hand colored engraving is by Fournier after Edouard Travies (1809-c1868) one of the best of France's scientific artists; his bird drawings are considered to be some of the finest ever produced.
