Theo van Hoytema was a Dutch printmaker, illustrator and graphic designer, best-known his depictions of birds. Originally destined for a career in finance, he took an evening course at the Royal Academy of Arts, meanwhile drawing and painting stuffed animals at the Zoological Museum in Leiden. This led to his first commission as a scientific illustrator, and from hence he ventured into lithography, children’s books and calendars. He also designed furniture and interiors. As he developed creatively, his style came to reflect the influence of Art Nouveau, which responded to the bleakness of industrialization with designs inspired by nature. .
